01Why interlock

A paved surface is a
structure, not a finish.

Most paving that fails did not fail because the blocks were weak. It failed because nothing was holding them together. Interlock is what turns a few hundred separate pieces into one surface that carries load as a whole.

  1. The joints open

    Without mechanical interlock, each block carries its own load alone. Traffic walks them apart a millimetre at a time until the joint sand washes out and the bedding follows it.

  2. The edges creep

    A paved field pushes outward under load. With no kerb to restrain it the perimeter migrates, and once the outer course moves, every course behind it has somewhere to go.

  3. The base pumps

    Water that cannot drain sits in the bedding layer. Each axle pass pumps it up through the joints, carrying fines with it, and the surface starts to dish where the traffic runs.

Load spreads. The wheel sits on one block, but the toothed flanks drag six more into the load path and hand it to the base over a wide footprint. Nothing moves relative to anything else.

Zig-Zag

Sawtooth flanks on all four sides mean a block cannot lift or rotate without dragging its neighbours with it. Under a braking truck the whole field behaves as one slab rather than a set of loose tiles. This is the shape to specify when vehicles are involved and you only get one chance to lay it.

Laying pattern

The strongest interlock available. Every block is braced by four neighbours, so braking and turning loads cannot walk the surface apart. Specified for driveways and road work. Needs a 2:1 block - a herringbone will not close up with any other proportion.

What to include

On top of the 8% this pattern loses to cutting. Keep a few percent spare for future repairs — the batch colour will never match exactly later.

Five steps. Skip any one
and the block fails early.

Interlocking pavers all look the same on a pallet. What separates a block that lasts twenty years from one that crumbles in three happens entirely before it reaches your site.

  1. Grading and batching

    Strength is decided before anything is mixed.

    Aggregate is sieved to a controlled grading curve so the fines fill the voids between the coarse particles. A well-graded mix needs less cement paste to reach the same strength, and less paste means less shrinkage. Water is batched to a fixed water-cement ratio, not by eye.

  2. Hydraulic pressing

    This is the step that separates a paver from a cement block.

    The mix is pressed under high hydraulic load while being vibrated. Vibration lets the particles find their tightest packing; pressure holds them there while the paste sets around them. The result is a dense block with very little connected pore space — which is why it does not soak up water and spall.

  3. Water curing

    Concrete does not dry. It reacts.

    Cement gains strength by hydrating, and hydration stops the moment the block loses its moisture. Blocks are kept continuously wet for the full curing period. A paver rushed off the curing bed at seven days can lose a third of the strength it was designed for, and no amount of later care gets it back.

  4. Batch testing

    A grade you cannot show is a grade you do not have.

    Samples are drawn from each batch and crushed to failure to confirm the compressive grade, alongside checks on water absorption and abrasion resistance. Results are logged against the batch, so any block we ship can be traced back to the day it was cast and the numbers it produced.

  5. Palletising and dispatch

    Blocks arrive laid out the way they will be used.

    Cured blocks are strapped in counted pallets so quantity is verifiable on delivery rather than estimated from a heap. Colour batches are kept together and marked, because two pallets from different pigment batches laid side by side will show a seam that no amount of washing removes.
